The Developmental Cross Country Series (DXCS) includes five developmental events at various park locations around New York City. The program then culminates with the NYRR Youth Running Series at Fred Lebow Cross Country, a timed and scored race that will act as a championship event. All events, with the exception of the NYRR Youth Running Series at Fred Lebow Cross Country, will take place during the school day between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
The DXCS program is open to public school students in grades 3–8. Coaches may bring up to 80 children. We ask that coaches prioritize safety and act in accordance with the Chancellor’s Regulations for adult supervision on school trips. Each participating student must be entered in your STRIDES roster and pre-registered for the event. Student release forms will be sent to the coach once enrolled. Forms hsould be signed by the student's parent or guardian and must be returned to NYRR before the specified deadline in order to be officially enrolled in DXCS.
At the developmental events, students can participate in a 1- or 2-mile run but cannot run both distances. Students in grades 3-5 are encouraged to run in the 1-mile event and students in grades 6-8 are encouraged to participate in the 2-mile event. These are only suggestions, as students may choose to run in either event. Your students will be able to choose their running distance on the day of the event. These events will not be timed; coaches are encouraged to time their students. At the conclusion of each event, runners will receive participant ribbons.
The NYRR Youth Running Series at Fred Lebow Cross Country event will take place at Van Cortlandt Park, in the Bronx on Sunday, November 20. Coaches are required to pre-register their students for the 1.5-mile event by Thursday, November 3rd on STRIDES. All students in grades 3-8 who have attended one developmental met are invited.
Medals are awarded at the NYRR Youth Running Series at Fred Lebow Cross Country, to the top 10 male and female finishers in each of three age divisions, as follows:
First, second, and third place plaques are awarded to the top three male and female teams in each of the above age divisions. Team scores are calculated according to standard cross country scoring rules and are based on the finishing places of the top five individuals on a team. The team with the lowest score wins. A team may enter additional athletes in each division, but only the top five are added into the team score.
If it rains on the day of one of the school-day events, a determination will be made by 7:00 a.m. whether the meet needs to be cancelled. If cancellation is necessary, the primary contact for each school will be informed via e-mail, text message, and phone by 8:00 a.m. Cancelled events will not be rescheduled.
Registration for the 2016 Developmental Cross Country program is currently closed.
(Please note: Registrations for individual athletes are not accepted)
